Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity Accords Herm Shipplet Volunteer Award

January 3rd, 2023 Posted by Project News 0 thoughts on “Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity Accords Herm Shipplet Volunteer Award”

(Pittston, Pa.) During its most recent home dedication on December 11, 2022, Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity also recognized the recipients of four volunteer awards. One of these awards is coined the “Herm Shipplet Volunteer Award” and, this year, Prince of Peace Church was the recipient.

The Herm Shipplet Volunteer Award is given to a WVHFH volunteer who has demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment to and unselfish support of our local Habitat affiliate during the past twelve months. The award is named after the late Herm Shiplett, who was the unofficial ‘Site Director’ on four of our earlier projects.

Prince of Peace Church has donated lunches to our volunteers four times a year since 2015. Members of the church meet every quarter to prepare homemade food for our volunteers and they then deliver these lunches directly to the building site.

Get Involved with Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity

January 31st, 2017 Posted by 0 thoughts on “Get Involved with Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity”

We rely on the contribution of volunteer efforts for each house we complete. Construction site volunteers (skilled and unskilled) are always needed.

Volunteers are a very important part of our organization…

    WORK ON SITE

We build every Saturday from 9:00am-3pm (except holidays). For specific locations, directions and to schedule a volunteer date, contact our office at 570-820-8002 or e-mail volunteer@wv-hfh.org

All tools, safety glasses, and dust masks are furnished on the job site. If you have special tools that you prefer to use, please feel free to bring them.

Job sites are often dusty and dirty so please dress appropriately with old clothes and sturdy shoes.

    SUPPLY LUNCH

Lunch is a highlight for the Saturday volunteers. Workers take a break from building to enjoy good food in the company of the volunteers. Several local restaurants, churches or individuals have donated lunches. If you would like to donate lunch call the office at 570-820-8002 or email volunteer@wv-hfh.org. Sara, our volunteer coordinator, will contact you and confirm the number of volunteers that will be working that Saturday. It is a great way to meet some wonderful volunteers and help Habitat!

    SCHEDULE YOUR GROUP

Have a group and would like to help? If you or your group would like to volunteer by hammering and nailing or providing lunches for other volunteers, please call the office at 570-820-8002 or email Sara at volunteer@wv-hfh.org to schedule work

    How it Works..

February 29th, 2016 Posted by 0 thoughts on “How it Works..”

What is  Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity?

Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds simple, decent homes to sell to families in need.  We use volunteer labor and charitable gifts to ensure our homes are affordable to families in Wyoming Valley.  WVHFH is a Christian ministry dedicated to building homes in partnership with the entire community, including businesses, congregations, schools, individuals and partner families.

    How Does it Work?

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds or rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving fund that is used to build more houses.

    What is Sweat Equity?

When selected, you become a partner family in the Habitat movement. As a partner family WVHFH requires at least 200 hours of volunteer work to be completed as your house is constructed and before occupancy. This is called “sweat equity” and may be completed by assisting in the construction of your home and the homes of others. It may include building walls, painting, installing windows or working on other Habitat projects. Families who purchase Habitat homes invest at least 200 hours of sweat equity volunteer labor.

How Much Does a Habitat House Cost?

An average Habitat house for a family of four in the United States is 1100 square feet with 3 bedrooms. Prices will differ slightly depending on location. Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit included in the sale price and no interest charged on the mortgage. The average length of a Habitat mortgage is 25 years.

How Are the Partner Families Selected?

Our family selection committee considers the applicant’s level of need, willingness to become partners in the Habitat program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan. We follow a non-discriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat homeowner families.
